As South Africans, we’re unique. What’s relevant to the rest of the world, in terms of social media trends, may not be relevant to us. Largely due to the fact that we play by a very different set of rules, thanks to a variety of factors, such as:

• Being an emerging market
• Limited data access
• Data costs
• Political motivators

So what’s that got to do with the social media landscape?

Well, the cool guys and gals over at World Wide Worx and Ornico have done it again! They’ve released their annual Social Media Landscape report – and it’s mind-blowing!

We don’t always recognise how the social media landscape around us evolves, however, research shows that it is clear that we are seeing a shift in the way people interact and socialise.

Let’s take a closer look…

Here are the stats:

Facebook – the hero

Now used by a cool 16 million South Africans, which is up from 14 million in 2016, Facebook, undoubtedly, is the hero. Arthur Goldstuck, one of the country’s leading authorities on social media, had this to say:

“There is a misconception that younger people are leaving Facebook; however, a demographic breakdown of the local user data shows that it’s just a case of the younger Facebook users getting older – simply put, they aren’t teenagers anymore.”
